Quality Assured
Muster systems are certified to AS 5062:2022, meeting the compliance requirements of Australia's most demanding industries. Built to the highest standards. Reliable when it matters most.
The choice between automatic and manual fire suppression on heavy equipment is not really a choice at all when you understand how equipment fires develop. This page explains the key differences, where manual systems fail, and why automatic detection and actuation is the only reliable protection for equipment where fires develop faster than a human can respond.
Book a Risk AssessmentWhen a fire starts on your machine, there is no time to wonder whether your suppression system will work. Muster systems are engineered to remove that doubt entirely. Built to Australian Standards, deployed across mining, agriculture, construction and transport operations worldwide, and backed by a global network of authorised distributors, Muster delivers protection you can count on, every shift, every site, every machine.
Muster systems are certified to AS 5062:2022, meeting the compliance requirements of Australia's most demanding industries. Built to the highest standards. Reliable when it matters most.
From risk assessment and system design through to installation, maintenance and training, our expert distributor network provides end-to-end support. Rapid, reliable, and always compliant.
Continuously evolving to meet the demands of modern heavy industry, from autonomous vehicles to electric fleets.
Our suppression agents are fluorine-free and environmentally responsible. Muster systems are designed with ecological impact in mind, meeting global environmental protection standards without compromising on performance.
Automatic detection and F3 foam discharge. Smothers hydraulic fluid and diesel fires instantly. No operator needed. Reduces re-ignition risk
Compact automatic misting for small engine bays. Fine water-foam droplets absorb heat and suppress flames faster than any manual response.
Automatic total-flooding aerosol for enclosed electrical compartments. Activates in seconds. Requires no pressure cylinders, no agent storage, and no piping.
Non-pressurised and self-generating dry chemical agent, requiring no pressurised cylinders for agent discharge. Provides instantaneous flame suppression. Available with a T-start device for automatic thermal fire detection and require no external power supply.
A portable extinguisher supplements your automatic system but never replaces it. Required by AS5062 alongside every installed automatic system for secondary fire control.
Your system is designed on the Muster360 platform, which generates the bill of materials and the commissioning documentation for the installation.
Cloud based accessHeavy equipment fires typically start inside engine bays, hydraulic compartments and accessory housings that are enclosed, inaccessible during operation and surrounded by additional fuel sources. By the time smoke is visible from the cab, a fire in the engine bay has typically already ignited secondary fuel sources such as hydraulic lines, wiring looms and accumulated debris.
| Factor | Automatic System (MusterFire) | Manual Extinguisher Only |
|---|---|---|
| Detection | Automatic via LHD cable or spot detectors, <5 second response | Operator detects fire visually or by smell, typically 30-120s after ignition |
| Discharge | Automatic without operator intervention, works when operator cannot react | Operator must retrieve, aim and operate extinguisher under pressure |
| Access to fire zone | Nozzles pre-positioned inside the fire zone, no operator access required | Operator must open a hot, smoke-filled compartment to apply agent |
| Time to suppress | Agent on fire within seconds of detection | 60-120+ seconds from detection to agent application in best case |
| Protection while unattended | Active 24/7, including when machine is unattended | Zero protection when operator is away from the machine |
| Re-ignition protection | Foam and misting agents resist re-ignition with surface blanketing | No residual protection after discharge |
| AS5062 compliance | Yes, when installed to Muster360 design specification | No, portable extinguishers alone do not meet AS5062 for high-risk mobile plant |
A MusterFire fire risk assessment will determine exactly what automatic suppression your equipment needs. Stop relying on a manual response that may never come in time.
For heavy equipment, yes. An automatic system detects a fire inside enclosed compartments that an operator cannot safely access and discharges the suppression agent within seconds without human intervention.
Yes. Portable extinguishers are required as a supplementary measure even with an installed automatic system. They protect against fires outside the protected zones. AS 5062 and most site safety plans require both.
False activations can occur if detection is not correctly calibrated for the machine's normal operating temperatures. MusterFire system designs set detection thresholds based on the specific machine's thermal profile, verified during commissioning. Correctly commissioned MusterFire systems have very low false activation rates.
Shut down the machine immediately if safe to do so, evacuate the cab and move to a safe distance. The suppression system will discharge automatically. The operator should not attempt to re-enter the machine until the fire is confirmed suppressed and an authorised technician has assessed the system.
Yes. MusterFire alarm panels include a manual actuation option allowing the operator to trigger discharge before automatic activation, for example if they detect an unusual smell or see smoke before the detection temperature is reached.
Yes. Automatic detection and actuation operate without an operator present, helping protect equipment during unattended operation.
Automatic systems detect and actuate without waiting for an operator to identify the fire and reach the protected area. Manual response time varies with visibility, access, operator position, and site conditions.
AS 5062:2022 provides the standard framework. Specific legal requirements vary by state, industry and site safety management plans. Many mining and construction operations mandate automatic suppression on high-risk plant as a site condition.
LHD cable is specified at a detection temperature that accounts for the machine's normal operating temperature range. In a 45°C ambient environment, detection cable is rated well above the peak normal engine bay temperature to avoid false activations, while still being below the ignition temperature of fuel and hydraulic fluid.
The machine should not be re-started until an authorised technician has confirmed the fire is extinguished, assessed any component damage and re-commissioned the suppression system. A discharge report must be completed for insurance and compliance purposes.
