THE FACT

Excavators, often used in heavy duty operations such as earth and are movement, trenching, and excavation, typically utilise engines of high horsepower that produces considerable heat. Continuous use without breaks may lead to an increased risk of mechanical breakdowns or overheating, which can potentially lead to a fire, particularly when flammable substances like oil or other Class B fuels meet heated surfaces. The integration of fire suppression systems in excavators is crucial to ensure the safety of both the operators and equipment.

THE CHALLENGE

Three CAT 345GC excavators were set to be exported to a mining location. The customer requested the installation and commissioning of three foam LOP (loss of pressure) fire suppression systems before the excavators were moved to the Brisbane port. The mine site provided the necessary specifications and were required to be completed in a tight time frame. Additionally, the design required customer approval and had to comply with AS 5062:2016.

THE SOLUTION

Each CAT 345GC excavator was equipped with a Muster foam-based fire suppression system, an ideal choice for environments with risks of liquid hydrocarbon fuel fires. The installation included a Muster LOP pneumatic detection system, offering full protection against fire hazards in critical areas like the engine bay, pumps, and slew motor.

MusterFire International (MFI) provided these fire suppression systems through Amet Industries, a distributor based in Brisbane. They handled the installation, servicing, and maintenance of the systems. The installation was successfully completed in 3 days, ensuring timely delivery of the excavators to the port.

A full risk assessment was conducted, and the installed system was found to be fully compliant meeting the mine site requirements for discharge time.

THE OUTCOME

Successful delivery of three CAT 345GC excavators to the Bribane port, each equipped with a fully compliant Muster foam-based fire suppression system.Customer was happy with the outcome and have since ordered another three systems.
