Impulse Powder System (IPS) | Dry Chemical Fire Suppression

Muster System Range

Self-generating device suitable for local applications

The Impulse Powder System (IPS) is a self-generating fire suppression device that transforms dry chemical powder into a protective cloud upon electrical activation, effectively smothering flames and creating a fire blanket.

  • Self-generating, reliable non pressurised canister that is easy to use
  • Available in 4 different sizes and can be mounted directly within the risk areas or connected to a pipe network with nozzles
  • Connect up to 8 IPS units into a unified system using the Muster integration module
  • Can operate as a standalone device or as a dual agent system
  • Certified to AS5062 and AS4487

How the Muster Impulse Powder System Works

The Muster IPS module is a non-pressurised canister containing a dry chemical compound. Unlike conventional dry powder extinguisher cylinders that rely on stored pressure to expel agent, the IPS is self-generating. On electrical activation, an internal chemical reaction rapidly generates gas pressure within the canister, expelling the dry powder at high velocity as a dense suppression cloud.

This cloud of ultra-fine dry chemical particles coats the burning surface, interrupts the chemical chain reaction of combustion, and smothers the fire. The non-pressurised design means the canister carries no stored energy risk and does not depressurise over time — ensuring system readiness without frequent pressure checks.

IPS modules mount directly within the risk enclosure, providing immediate point-of-risk suppression. Manual push-button or lever activation is also available for operator-initiated response at the first sign of fire.

CSIRO Verified: Independent Scientific Validation

The Muster IPS (M2IPS Series) modules carry CSIRO verification, confirming that the system design, materials, and suppression performance have been independently validated by Australia's national science agency. CSIRO verification is one of the highest standards of product validation available in Australia and is recognised by WorkSafe, WHS regulators, and major industrial procurement teams.

Verified attributes of the M2IPS Series include: suitability for suppressing Class A, B, C, and E fires; temperature operating range of -50°C to +50°C; and confirmed performance in extinguishing dry chemical powder fires in enclosed enclosures.

Choosing Between IPS, SAG, and Foam

IPS — Impulse Powder

Class A, B, C, E fires. Non-pressurised, self-generating canister. CSIRO verified. -50°C to +50°C. Compact, mounts in risk zone. Best for enclosed enclosures with broad fire class coverage.

SAG — Solid Aerosol

Class A, B, C, E fires. Chemical chain interruption. AS 4487-2013 certified. No pipework. Up to 8 units per installation. Best for enclosed electrical compartments.

Foam-Based

Class B (liquid hydrocarbon) fires. Blankets and cools fuel surface. AS 5062:2022 certified. 15L–110L cylinders. Best for larger machine risk zones and hydraulic rooms.

Combination

IPS, SAG, and foam can be combined in dual agent configurations on a single Muster alarm panel for machines with complex multi-zone risk profiles.

FAQs

What is an impulse powder fire suppression system?

The Muster IPS is a non-pressurised and self-contained hybrid-aerosol system that delivers a gas-powder extinguishing medium to rapidly extinguish fire on electrical activation. Mounted directly in the risk enclosure, it requires no pressurised cylinders to propel and are not stored pressure type. It is CSIRO verified and effective on Class A, B, C, and E fires.

How is the IPS different from a conventional dry powder extinguisher?

A conventional dry powder extinguisher relies on stored gas pressure to discharge the agent. The Muster IPS is non-pressurised — the internal chemical reaction generates discharge pressure at the moment of activation, eliminating pressure loss over time and the stored energy risks of pressurised cylinders.

What fire classes does the IPS suppress?

The Muster IPS Series is CSIRO verified for Class A (solid combustibles), Class B (flammable liquids), Class C (gas fires), and Class E (electrical equipment).

What temperature range does the IPS operate in?

The Muster IPS Series operates from -50°C to +85°C — the widest cold-weather operating range in the Muster product range, suitable for arctic mining and cold climate industrial applications.

Is the IPS CSIRO verified?

Yes. The M2IPS Series has been evaluated and verified by CSIRO Verification Services against the relevant requirements of AS 4487:2013, ISO 15779:2011, AS 1851:2012, NFPA 2010:2006 and UL 2127, Edition 1.

Does the IPS require pipework?

No. Like the SAG unit, the IPS mounts directly within the protected enclosure with no external cylinder, pipework, or discharge nozzles.

Can the IPS be activated manually?

Yes. In addition to automatic alarm panel activation, the IPS supports manual activation via a push-button or a lever remote actuator.

Can the IPS be combined with SAG or foam systems?

Yes. Muster IPS can be combined with Foam or SAG modules in a dual-agent configuration controlled by a single alarm panel.

How long does the IPS last before replacement?

The non-pressurised design provides a long operational life. Specific service intervals are set by your authorised Muster distributor during commissioning.

Where is the IPS best suited?

The Muster Impulse Powder System is best suited to compact, enclosed or partially enclosed high-risk areas, such as engine compartments, electrical cabinets, control panels and machinery enclosures. Its compact, self-generating modules provide rapid local or total-flooding fire suppression and are suitable for both mobile equipment and fixed industrial applications.
