Which Muster Extinguisher is Right for Your Fire Risk?

Portable fire extinguishers are classified by the fire classes they can suppress. Choosing the wrong type for your risk environment is both ineffective and potentially dangerous. Every Muster extinguisher is rated to AS/NZS 1841 and clearly labelled by class.

ABE Powder — Broadest Coverage

Covers Class A (solid combustibles), Class B (flammable liquids), and Class E (electrical equipment). The standard choice for vehicles, machinery, and mixed industrial environments. Available in handheld sizes and heavy-duty trolley-mounted configurations up to 90kg.

CO2 — Electrical and Sensitive Equipment

Carbon dioxide extinguishers leave no residue, making them the correct choice for electrical switchboards, server rooms, control cabinets, and sensitive electronic equipment where powder residue would cause secondary damage.

Foam — Liquid Fuel and Class A Fires

Foam extinguishers suppress Class B liquid fires by blanketing the fuel surface and preventing vapour release. Also effective on Class A combustibles. Suitable for fuel storage areas, workshops, and transport depots.

Wet Chemical — Kitchen and Cooking Oil Fires

Wet chemical extinguishers are specifically designed for Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats — the most common cause of commercial kitchen fires. Not suitable for electrical equipment.

For industrial sites, mobile equipment, and vehicle applications, ABE powder is the standard specification. For electrical-only risk zones, CO2 is the recommended choice. Your authorised Muster distributor can confirm the correct extinguisher type and size for your specific risk assessment.

Mounting Brackets and Securing Systems for Vehicles and Industrial Equipment

A portable fire extinguisher is only useful in an emergency if it is mounted securely, within reach of the operator, and protected from the vibration and impact of heavy vehicle operation. Muster's bracket range is designed specifically for industrial and vehicle applications where standard bracket systems fail.

Fire extinguisher mounting brackets

Heavy-Duty Vehicle Brackets

Engineered for high-vibration environments including mining excavators, haul trucks, and agricultural equipment. Holds the extinguisher firmly through full operating cycles without loosening or damaging the cylinder.

Over-Centre Vehicle Brackets

Over-centre locking mechanism secures the extinguisher positively in the bracket with a single release action for rapid deployment. Suited to cab-mounted positions on excavators, loaders, and heavy transport.

Adjustable Strap and Buckle Brackets

Universal fit to accommodate a wide range of extinguisher sizes and shapes. Useful where a fixed bracket is not practical or where the extinguisher size may change during future servicing.

AS 1851 Compliance

All Muster accessories are supplied to support the maintenance and inspection requirements of AS 1851. UV extinguisher bags, security ties, service punch, and date tags all contribute to a compliant, documented service record.

Muster Fire Blankets — Fast, Chemical-Free Fire Suppression for Specific Risks

The Muster Fire Blanket consists of a woven fibreglass fire-resistant fabric that provides a fast and effective way to smother specific fire types — in particular, fires involving cooking oil, clothing ignition, and small contained fires in industrial or workshop settings.

A fire blanket works by cutting off the fire's oxygen supply. Placed over a burning pan, a burning surface, or around a person whose clothing is alight, the blanket seals the fire from air and extinguishes it without any chemical discharge.

Muster fire blanket for selected fire risks

When to Use a Fire Blanket

Small contained fires in cooking areas, fuel spills in confined spaces, clothing fires, or as a supplementary measure alongside an extinguisher. Not a replacement for a rated fire extinguisher in industrial applications.

When NOT to Use a Fire Blanket

Large fires, fires involving electrical equipment under power, or any fire that has spread beyond a single small contained area. Retrieve the extinguisher — not the blanket — for vehicle or machinery fires.

Do not

Construction and Rating

Woven fibreglass construction rated for fire-resistant use. Available through Muster's authorised distributor network alongside the portable extinguisher and accessories range.

Industrial and Site Use

Fire blankets are a practical addition to tool rooms, workshops, lunchrooms, and first-aid stations on mine sites and construction sites where cooking or heating equipment creates a localised fire risk.

Portable Extinguishers and Automatic Systems — They Work Together

A portable fire extinguisher is a mandatory safety item on any industrial vehicle or work site, but it is not a substitute for an automatic fire suppression system on high-risk heavy equipment. The two products serve fundamentally different roles.

What an Automatic System Does

Detects a fire at the ignition point, activates before the operator sees smoke, shuts down the machine, and discharges the suppression agent directly onto the risk zone — all without any human involvement.

What a Portable Extinguisher Does

Provides the operator with a manual response option after safely exiting the machine, or as a first-response tool for a small visible fire that has not yet triggered the automatic system. Required on every vehicle under AS 5062:2022 alongside any automatic system.

Why You Need Both

Australian Standards AS 5062:2022 requires a compliant portable extinguisher to be carried on mobile plant fitted with an automatic suppression system. The extinguisher is operator backup — the automatic system is the primary protection.

What Muster Provides

Muster supplies both: automatic foam-based, misting, SAG, and IPS systems for the machine, and a full range of portable extinguishers and accessories for operator-level response. Ask your distributor to specify both for your equipment.

Understanding AS/NZS 1841 and AS 1851 for Portable Extinguishers

Every Muster portable fire extinguisher is manufactured and approved to AS/NZS 1841, the Australian and New Zealand Standard for portable fire extinguishers. This standard governs the design, construction, performance, and testing of extinguisher units.

AS/NZS 1841

Product Standard

Governs the manufacture and performance of the extinguisher itself. All Muster portable extinguishers are approved to this standard. Required for extinguishers used on Australian and New Zealand work sites.

AS 1851

Maintenance Standard

Governs the ongoing inspection and servicing of fire protection equipment. Muster's accessories range — UV bags, security ties, service punch, and date tags — supports compliance with AS 1851 maintenance documentation requirements.

Inspection Frequency

AS 1851 requires monthly visual checks, 6-monthly inspections, annual maintenance, and 5-yearly extended service. Your authorised Muster distributor manages scheduled servicing and documentation.

Site and Insurance Requirements

Major project owners, mining operators, and insurers require AS/NZS 1841-approved extinguishers on all vehicles and plant. Compliance documentation from Muster distributors supports site safety management files and WHS records.

FAQs

What types of portable fire extinguishers does Muster offer?

Muster offers ABE Powder, Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Foam, Air/Water, and Wet Chemical extinguishers. All are approved to AS/NZS 1841 and powder coated red. They are available in handheld sizes and heavy-duty trolley-mounted configurations from 30kg to 90kg DCP or 90L Foam.

Which fire extinguisher is best for a mining vehicle or heavy equipment?

ABE Powder (dry chemical powder) is the standard specification for mining vehicles and heavy equipment. It covers Class A (solid combustibles), Class B (flammable liquids), and Class E (electrical) fires — the three most common fire types on mobile machinery. It is approved to AS/NZS 1841 and satisfies the portable extinguisher requirement under AS 5062:2022.

Do I need a portable extinguisher if my machine already has an automatic suppression system?

Yes. AS 5062:2022 requires a compliant portable extinguisher to be carried on mobile plant in addition to any automatic suppression system. The automatic system is the primary protection; the portable extinguisher is the operator backup for visible small fires or post-event response after safely exiting the machine.

What is AS/NZS 1841 and why does it matter?

AS/NZS 1841 is the Australian and New Zealand Standard governing the design, construction, performance, and testing of portable fire extinguishers. All Muster portable extinguishers are approved to this standard. It is required by major project owners, mining operators, and insurers for any extinguisher used on Australian work sites.

What is AS 1851 and how does it apply to extinguisher servicing?

AS 1851 is the Australian Standard for the routine service of fire protection systems and equipment. It requires monthly visual checks, 6-monthly inspections, annual maintenance, and 5-yearly extended service of portable extinguishers. Muster's accessories range — service punch, date tags, security ties — supports compliant AS 1851 servicing and documentation.

What are fire extinguisher mounting brackets and which type do I need?

Extinguisher mounting brackets secure portable extinguishers on vehicles and machinery so they are within reach during an emergency and protected from vibration damage. Muster offers heavy-duty vehicle brackets, over-centre vehicle brackets, and adjustable strap brackets. For mining and agricultural equipment, heavy-duty vehicle brackets are the standard choice.

When should I use a fire blanket instead of a fire extinguisher?

A fire blanket is best for small, contained fires — cooking oil fires, clothing fires, or small surface fires where smothering the fire by cutting off oxygen is practical. For vehicle fires, machinery fires, or any fire involving flammable liquids or electrical equipment, use the correct rated fire extinguisher — not a fire blanket.

Can I use a CO2 extinguisher on an electrical fire?

Yes. CO2 extinguishers are Class E rated and safe for use on live electrical equipment. They leave no residue, making them the preferred choice for switchboards, control cabinets, and sensitive electronic equipment where ABE powder residue would cause secondary damage to components.

What are UV extinguisher bags and why are they used?

UV extinguisher bags are protective covers that shield portable extinguishers from UV radiation, dust, moisture, and the harsh conditions of outdoor industrial environments. They extend the service life of the extinguisher and help maintain the cylinder finish in compliance with AS 1851 maintenance standards.
