How the Muster SAG Fire Suppression System Works

The Muster SAG system uses a solid chemical compound that converts to aerosol when activated, suppressing fire in enclosed spaces without pipework, cylinders or nozzles.

Enclosed fire-risk areas present a specific engineering challenge. There often isn’t space for conventional pipework, cylinders or nozzle arrays. The fire can develop rapidly. And when it does, the window for suppression is measured in seconds, not minutes.

The Muster Solid Aerosol Generator (SAG) fire suppression system was designed to answer exactly that problem. It’s a compact, self-contained suppression unit that requires no pressurised cylinder, no distribution network, and no complex installation. When fire is detected, it discharges aerosol directly from the canister to suppress the flame at its source.

What Is a Solid Aerosol Fire Suppression System?

A solid aerosol fire suppression system generates a suppression agent from a solid chemical compound rather than storing a pressurised liquid or gas. When the compound is thermally or electrically activated, it produces micron-sized particles and gases that mix to form a uniform aerosol cloud.

That aerosol cloud works by interrupting the chemical chain reaction that sustains a flame. It doesn’t rely on flooding an area with inert gas or smothering a fire with foam. It acts directly on the combustion chemistry. The result is rapid, effective suppression across the entire protected enclosure.

Inside the Muster SAG Canister

Each Muster SAG unit contains a proprietary solid chemical compound. The canister is compact, lightweight, and mounts directly inside the protected enclosure. Because the aerosol is self-generating, there’s no pressurised cylinder required.

SAG System Highlights

  • No external pipework or nozzles — discharge happens directly from the unit
  • Stainless steel construction as standard, built for industrial environments
  • 10-year shelf life with 5 to 10 years operational life and minimal maintenance
  • Scalable: up to 8 SAG units can be connected via the Muster Integration Module

How Detection Triggers the SAG System

The Muster SAG system relies on MusterWire linear heat detection (LHD). MusterWire is available in 68°C, 105°C and 180°C ratings. When the wire reaches its rated temperature, it signals the Muster Alarm Panel — which enters fire mode, triggers the audible alarm, initiates shutdown sequences, and sends the activation signal to the SAG canister.

The system can also be activated remotely or manually via a remote actuator, giving operators the ability to respond at the first visible sign of fire.

Where the Muster SAG System Is Used

Common Applications

  • Generator sets (gensets) in enclosed cabinets
  • Battery compartments in electric vehicles and mine-site buses
  • Electrical enclosures and switchgear rooms
  • Rail wagon equipment bays
  • Autonomous vehicle equipment spaces

Dual and Triple Agent Configurations

Multi-Agent Flexibility

The SAG system can be combined with Muster foam and Muster Impulse Powder (IPS) systems to create dual or triple agent configurations, addressing multiple fire classes within a single installation.
